Here's What We're Working On

Data Literacy

Learning Goal: We will collect, analyze and make use of real life data to create graphs, get information and make informed decisions.
Success Criteria - what our students aim to achieve:
  • I can read, interpret and make conclusions about primary and secondary data
  • I can design a survey, collect and organize data, analyze graphs and patterns and communicate my findings

5 things that you can do at home to support learning about data literacy:
  1. Look at graphs in the media (newspapers, magazines, TV) and talk about what you are seeing - what is the graph showing? What are the variables? What are the main findings? What stands out to you? What type of graph is it?
  2. Get your child involved in tallying - taking inventory of similar objects around the house
  3. Encourage your child to create surveys and ask members of the family - what's your favourite......? They can then find create ways to display what they have found
  4. Look at charts and graphs together and discuss whether you think there might be a better way to show the data
  5. Go online together and learn more about data and graphing - here are some recommended sites: Math Games, IXL Math (free trial period) & teAchnology
